The descent into hell

That pretty much sums up what I have been through. Today will mark the three year anniversary when we learned about Stimpy's VAS. I had never heard of VAS. I found a lump on her leg on May 4th, and we took her in for an exam and we were told it was probably something called vaccine associated sarcoma. She went into surgery on May 7, 2010 and the biopsy confirmed it was VAS.

The next 18 months were pure hell (as the months following her death have been as well). Immediately following that surgery, her lump returned. We were told she needed radiation. I put my life on hold and immediately left for Columbia, MO on July 5th, and we lived in a hotel for a month while she underwent the radiation therapy. Every morning, Monday through Friday, I would take her in.

My epic battle with Boehringer Ingelheim began. They ignored me for almost a year but I tormented them, much like they had tormented me, until they finally acknowledged me and their attorney Marla Persky, and then CEO of BI Vetmedica flew to Oklahoma City to discuss VAS with us. No apology of course for what they did to Stimpy or the other victims of their vaccine. They did donate $20,000 to Kobi's Fund after the meeting but I have still stayed on top of them demanding changes and disclosure. They hate me as much as I hate them.

Stimpy's leg was amputated November 11, 2010 because the VAS had returned. Exactly one year later, November 11, 2011, she died from VAS.

It has been pure hell. I have trouble forgiving myself, even now. We spent over $40,000 on her care over the 18 month period trying to save her. VAS makes no distinctions based on how much you can spend. Too often, you lose the battle.

I am feeling melancholy now. I still have a lot of anger that I direct at Boehringer Ingelheim and not a week passes that I do not let them know they killed Stimpy and so many others.
